Bilateral relations

• The relationship between Algeria and Iran is based on the principles of respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of States. The bilateral relationship has gone through different milestones:

• In 1975, Algeria successfully mediated between Iran and Irak to settle a border dispute. The mediation led to the signing of Algiers Agreement.

• During the 80’s, our country was resolutely engaged in an attempt to stop the war between Iran and Irak, thus paying a heavy price in this endeavor by the martyrdom of its Foreign Affairs Minister, Mohammed Seddik Benyahia, and his delegation when his airplane crashed at the borders between Turkey and Irak on his way to Tehran in May 1982.

• In 20^th February 1981, Algeria succeeded in liberating 52 American hostages that have been held at the American Embassy in Tehran.

• Algeria represented Iranian interests in Washington after the severance of diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States of America in 1980.    

• Both countries witnessed high level bilateral visits.

• Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the Republic, met his Iranian counterpart, Ibrahim Raïssi, in the margin of the 6^th Summit of the Forum of Gas exporting Countries in Doha on 22^nd of February 2022.

• He also received a phone call from President Raïssi on 9^th April 2023 at the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan. They agreed on strengthening bilateral ties at political and economic level.

• They discussed the situation in Palestine and the aggression that it is facing, especially in Al-Aqsa Mosque and the West Bank.

• The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, called on 30^th March 2023 Mr. Ahmed Attaf congratulating him for his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad and on the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

• They agreed on the need to reinvigorate the mechanisms of bilateral cooperation.

• They renewed their unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people.

• They reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and objectives of The UN Charter, to the Non-Aligned Movement and multilateral diplomacy in the resolution of conflicts through peaceful solutions that allow the international community to overcome polarization and avoid its dramatic repercussions on international peace and security.          

• Their cooperation is governed by the following mechanisms :

- The High Joint Commission

- The Follow-up Commission

- Political consultations mechanism

- Algeria Iran Business Council

- Algeria Iran Parliamentary Friendship Committee

• Around 50 bilateral legal instruments (Conventions, Agreements, MoUs …) has been signed and cover all fields of cooperation.
